Windsor police, OPP, arrest five for alleged impaired driving

Police officers across Windsor-Essex were busy over the weekend, handling reports of impaired drivers.

Windsor police say four drivers were arrested, three of them at border ports of entry. Ontario Provincial Police handled at least one additional driver.

The OPP's arrest occurred on Friday evening in Leamington. Soon after 8:30 p.m., patrol officers responded to a single-vehicle crash on Erie Street South near Parkdale Avenue.

A 59-year-old Leamington woman is charged with impaired driving.

The four arrests by Windsor police all were within an eight-hour timeframe on Sunday morning.

The first took place soon after midnight, when officers responded to a report of an unresponsive person on Seminole Street near Arthur Road. The woman was found slumped over the steering wheel with the engine running. Upon awakening her, police found signs of impairment.

A search of the vehicle uncovered 1.4 grams of suspected fentanyl, 3.2 grams of suspected cannabis, and a pipe with suspected fentanyl residue. A 41-year-old woman is charged with impaired driving and possession of a Schedule I substance.

The second arrest took place at about the same time at the Ambassador Bridge. Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) found a driver showing signs of impairment and an open container in the vehicle.

Windsor police were called to perform a roadside test, and eventually arrested a 23-year-old man for driving with an excessive blood-alcohol level.

The third arrest was at around 4 a.m. at the Gordie Howe International Bridge, where CBSA agents suspected a woman of driving while impaired.

A 23-year-old woman is charged with driving with an excessive blood-alcohol level.

The fourth Windsor arrest was at around 7:30 a.m. at the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel. CBSA officers spotted a female driver who appeared to be impaired and notified Windsor police.

The 29-year-old is charged with impaired driving and driving with excessive blood alcohol.

The charges have not been proven in court.
