Cyber attack at Windsor-Essex Children's Aid Society under investigation

An investigation is underway after a cyber incident at the Windsor-Essex Children's Aid Society.

The society reports they were the victim of an incident on August 6, 2026. A cybersecurity expert was retained to investigate, and law enforcement has been notified.

"Safeguarding its employees’ and service recipients’ information is a key priority for WECAS, and the investigation includes a detailed review and validation of potentially affected systems and data. At this time, the experts’ investigation has not yet determined whether any data has been accessed or removed from WECAS’ systems," the society said in a statement.

WECAS reports it will notify any affected individuals if it discovers any personal information was impacted.

All services are fully operational; however, the phone system has been affected. Callers can leave a message, and the team will return calls as soon as possible.

The Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCCSS) and the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario have also been notified of the incident.
