Expect a crowd outside Windsor-Tecumseh-Lakeshore MP Kathy Borrelli's constituency office on Tecumseh Road East on Tuesday.
Starting at 1 p.m., demonstrators will demand Ottawa uphold the Canada Health Act and push Borrelli to take their concerns to the federal government.
The demonstration is one of many across Canada today as part of a nationwide day of action organized by the Canada Health Coalition.
Alberta's Bill 11 comes into effect on Tuesday, allowing doctors to accept payment from patients who don't want to wait for treatment on a waiting list. They say the legislation is clear that provincial and territorial health plans must be delivered on a non-profit basis by a public authority.
"Forty years ago, on April 17, 1984, the Canada Health Act was passed unanimously into law, guaranteeing every Canadian access to health care, regardless of income," read a release from the Windsor-Essex Health Coalition. "Health coalitions warn this is a direct violation of the Canada Health Act and if left unchallenged in Alberta, it will spread province to province."
On Saturday, the local health coalition held a similar protest outside Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Andrew Dowie's office against private clinics that are allowed to operate in Ontario. It alleges that patients at private clinics offering diagnostic tests, cataract surgeries and other procedures are being charged user fees.
