Strike vote for Stellantis workers this weekend

Unifor Local 444 will hold a strike vote this weekend for members at Stellantis.

Contract talks between Unifor and the automaker are paused for the time being after the union reached collective agreements with Ford Canada and General Motors this past summer.

The contract for those workers expired on September 20.

Talks are said to be at an impasse over Stellantis's plan to sell the Brampton Assembly Plant and other issues.

The strike vote at the Colosseum at Caesars Windsor on Saturday will start after a meeting outlining the latest information from bargaining.

Unifor Local 444 President James Stewart says the doors will open at 9 a.m., and the meeting will start an hour later.

"This won't be a long meeting," said Stewart in a message on social media. "Traditionally, a strike authorization vote is only 15 or 20 minutes long."

The results of the vote are expected on Monday.

"We're asking you to vote yes. It is important to send a strong message to the company that we have a strong mandate from our members to be successful in this bargaining," added Stewart.

The union represents 6,000 workers at the Windsor Assembly Plant.
