SIU invokes mandate after Thanksgiving incident in Essex

Ontario's law enforcement oversight agency has taken over the investigation of a man being injured during an incident last week.

A spokesperson with the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) told WindsorNewsToday.ca that Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers responded to a 911 call about a man in distress at a house on Keown Street in Essex, shortly after 2 p.m. on Monday, October 12.

Few details have been released, but there was an interaction between the man and OPP officers. The man was checked out at a local hospital the next day and diagnosed with a serious, but non-life-threatening injury. He was treated and has since been released.

The injury was not reported to the OPP until Thursday, October 15, at which point police contacted the SIU, which has invoked its mandate.

The SIU has assigned three investigators to the case.

Anyone with information on this incident should contact the SIU at 1-800-787-8529.
