Nurses honoured for outstanding oncology care

Windsor Regional Hospital honoured two of its nurses with the Daniel Johnson Excellence in Oncology Nursing Award this week.

The award was started by the Johnson family after Daniel Johnson spent a month in the oncology unit in 2010.

"After Dan's passing, we were really grateful for the wonderful care that the hospital provided for him," said Megan Cascadden, Johnson's daughter. "It was suggested that maybe a fund could share Dan's memory and his honour and also give back to the hospital."

Award recipients Jennifer Hughes and Michelle Gagnier will each be given funds to pursue advanced training for patient pain management.

"We do it every day, but there is always something more to learn an there's always something to take back from every experience. Every person who passes through our doors, they take a little bit of my heart," said Hughes.

Gagnier said the award is particularly meaningful to her because she was nominated by her peers.

'It's very humbling and a big honour to be recognized by my peers," said Gagnier.
