Is your carbon monoxide detector working?

Windsor Fire and Rescue Services is focused on the dangers of carbon monoxide gas this week.

It's Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week this week, and fire officials are stressing the importance of having a working carbon monoxide alarm in each home.

The alarms are required by law in homes with fuel-fired appliances, fireplaces, or garages. They are required on each floor of the home and outside bedrooms.

Carbon monoxide gas is colourless, odourless, tasteless, and deadly. Each year, Ontario records multiple deaths from accidental exposure.

The symptoms of carbon monoxide gas exposure include headaches, nausea, dizziness, breathlessness, and loss of consciousness.

Fire officials urge residents to test their carbon monoxide alarm each month and change the batteries at least once a year.

If you suspect you or someone in your home is suffering from exposure, go outside and call 911.

Never use barbecues, gas-powered generators, or portable fuel-burning camping equipment inside your home, and have all fuel-burning appliances, heating systems, and fireplaces inspected and cleaned by a professional each year.
