Windsor Police get help from London to address open drug use downtown

Windsor Police are learning some lessons from the London Police Service about handling calls about open drug use downtown.

The Windsor Police Service says it has responded to more than 1,200 calls regarding open drug use this year, made 33 arrests, and referred 560 people to health, housing, and other community supports.

Officers have also seized illegal drugs, including fentanyl, cocaine, and crack cocaine, along with pipes and needles.

Members of the Windsor Police Service City Centre Patrol were in London recently to learn more about the open-air substance-use initiative, exchange practical strategies, and discuss training. In the coming weeks, members of the London Police Service will visit Windsor to continue their exchange of ideas and information.

"These efforts respond directly to concerns we have heard from the community," said Windsor Police Chief Jason Crowley. "Our goal is not to criminalize addiction, but to deter open drug use, address public disorder, and disrupt drug trafficking, while ensuring people experiencing substance-use challenges are connected with support services available to them."

Windsor Police continue to encourage residents to report open drug use by calling 519-258-6111, or 911 if there is an immediate threat to public safety.

If you or someone you know is suffering from substance-use challenges, contact Victim Services of Windsor and Essex County at 519-723-2711 or the Windsor Police Service Victim Assistance Unit at 519-255-600 ext. 7179.
