Lancers Football Seeks To Replace Local Legend

Former Windsor Quarterback Austin Kennedy leaves a substantial statistical void with the Lancers, but Windsor head coach Joe D'Amore knows he's got more to replace than just eight-yard scrambles and gutsy audible calls.

D'Amore says Kennedy served as the total package: a hard worker who devoted his full effort both to the classroom -- where he achieved the team's highest grade point average -- and the field.

Though a football team typically has six or seven leaders, D'Amore says Kennedy was the alpha male.

"He was the guy that ran the ship," D'Amore says. "When he spoke, the team listened."

Kennedy's name is inscribed all over OUA record books, including his tie for all-time career passing touchdowns (79), but his intellect between plays is what D'Amore misses the most. The current slew of Lancer quarterbacks sometimes have difficulty setting up the offense.

"There was sometimes in the spring (workouts) the quarterback would go call a play... and they wouldn't even notice (the incorrect personnel) because they're new," D'Amore says. "And that's the stuff that we may see as coaches that might hurt us."
