Barons beat Essex in OT to win Schmalz Cup

The Hanover Barons are the 2025 Provincial Junior Hockey League (PJHL) champions.

They beat the Essex 73s 5-4 in overtime on Saturday, sweeping the best-of-seven series to win the Schmalz Cup.

It was Essex who started the scoring in Game 4 as Gabriel Piccolo found the back of the net just over four minutes into the first period.

The Barons tied the game just 12 seconds later thanks to a goal from Kyle Maloney.

The second period was dominated by Essex as they scored three goals. They came from Santiago Jimenes, Patrick McManus, and Nate Dowling.

The Barons got the score within two under five minutes into the third period, thanks to a goal from Ryan Colquhoun.

They added another a few minutes later from Sam Barrett before Danny Scott tied the game just over halfway through the period.

Getting the championship winning goal in overtime was Aaron Dukeshire.

This is the second time the Barons have won the Schmalz Cup. The first was back in 1991 against the Orangeville Crushers.
