Detroit is known for cars, but this weekend, professional golfers from all over the world will be centre-stage.
A field of 156 golfers is in the Motor City for the PGA's Rocket Classic, held at the Detroit Golf Club.
Golfers began arriving this week to become familiar with the course and for practice rounds. Last weekend, the John Shippen National Invitational took place, and it was won by Detroiter Joe Hooks, who will play in the Rocket Classic.
Qualifiers were held on Monday to fill the remaining four open slots on the Rocket Classic leaderboard.
Pro-am tournaments were held on Monday and Wednesday, and a youth clinic was held on Wednesday on the first tee.
Ten golfers who have won major championships will participate, including Collin Morikawa, a past PGA Championship and U.S. Open winner, 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama, 2023 U.S. Open winner Wyndham Clark, and 2011 PGA Championship victor Keegan Bradley.
The defending champion is Cam Davis of Australia, who also won in 2021.
Four Canadians are also golfing in the Classic. They are Adam Hadwin of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan; Ben Silverman of Thornhill, near Toronto; and Adam Svensson of Surrey, B.C., who won the 2022 RSM Classic.
The fourth Canadian, Ashton McCulloch of Kingston, qualified for the Classic as an amateur. He has played golf for Michigan State University.
In addition to Canada and the U.S., golfers are representing Argentina, Australia, Chile, China, Colombia, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Ireland, Japan, Norway, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, South Africa, South Korea, and Sweden.
The first round begins early Thursday, with the tournament running through Sunday.
