Robotics competition returns to Windsor for ninth year

The Windsor Essex Great Lakes Event Robotics Competition returns to the city, welcoming students from 34 secondary schools across the province.

FIRST Canada and Windsor-Essex FIRST host the showcasing event at the St. Denis Athletic and Community Centre on Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The annual Windsor Essex Great Lakes Event displays the design and engineering skills of teams who qualify for the FIRST Robotics Competition.

"This very unique event is a celebration of months of hard work and showcases the teams' skills, not only in engineering and robotics, but teamwork, entrepreneurship, cooperation, and professionalism," said the Windsor-Essex FIRST Robotics Chair and vice president of process and technology development at CenterLine in Windsor, Larry Koscielski. "In a time when job growth is unprecedented, FIRST Robotics is igniting a passion in these young minds that has already led to a significant and sustained impact on the talent pipelines for our region. These students are exactly the kind of rock stars in their fields that we want to attract, develop and retain in our community."

The event dates back to 2014 and is sponsored by companies worldwide, including more than half of all FORTUNE 500 companies like Boeing, Bombardier, FCA, and Google. It supports students considering careers in science, technology, engineering and math.

This year's event features 34 robots and other attractions.
