Cattle Feeders Group Responds To A-G's Drug Report

The President of the National Cattle Feeders Association says his sector is committed to carefully following all government regulations for the prudent use of veterinary drugs administered to food producing animals.

Larry Schweitzer is responding the the recent Auditor General's report on Antimicrobial Resistance.

The NCFA points out less than 10 per cent of the antibiotics used to treat Canadian cattle are typically used in human medicine.

Association General Manager Bryan Walton says the organisation supports a science-based regulatory system of evaluating the safety, quality and effectiveness of antimicrobial use.

He says the the cattle feeders group also supports regulatory modernization that reflects scientific and innovative solutions.

The Association says it is committed to working with the federal government as it advances two key initiatives in this area - the Federal Framework for Action and the Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance and Use in Canada.
