OFA Calls For Risk Management Program For Integrated Pest Management Losses

The Ontario Federation of Agriculture has made four key recommendations on the provincial government's neonic treated seeds proposal.

One is the call for a comprehensive pollinator health strategy, developed by industry and government, to address each of the nine identified pollinator health stressors.

The Federation wants the government to pursue additional technological changes to reduce the risk associated with fugitive dust from vacuum planters.

The OFA's submission includes the suggestion that Integrated Pest Management systems for corn and soybean production be phased in, and be voluntary - rather than the proposed regulated reduction approach.

The last key recommendation involves the creation of an NNI reduction risk management program.

The OFA says that program would provide a compensation vehicle for growers suffering undue losses on implementation of a verified integrated pest management system.

Federation President Don McCabe wrapped up the submission by expressing the hope the concerns of the corn and soybean industries will be fully taken into account by the government.
