Consumers Warned About Impact Of Weak Dollar On Food Prices

A warning to consumers about food prices.

Market analyst Kevin Grier suggests the impact of the weak Canadian dollar is already being felt in the price of fresh meats and produce.

He says consumers can expect it to work through on packaged goods through the rest of this year.

That's because it takes time for ingredient costs to filter through the chain.

But while depreciation makes Canadian food prices increase for consumers, Grier points out it provides advantages for Canadian manufacturers - both at home and exporting to the U-S.

He says Canadian manufacturers could gain market share in this country while their American competitors are less interested in this market because it's going to bring them fewer U-S dollars.

Grier's comments are included in the most recent publication of his Grocery Trade Review.
