Code Of Practice Software Part Of Pork Congress Presentations

The 2015 Ontario Pork Congress featured an educational section in the arena of the Stratford Rotary Complex.

Sessions included Ontario Pork reps Dean Gurney and Kristian Stevens discussing PigTrace, and Sam Bradshaw talking about the dangers of pit foam and gases.

PigTrace is a program supported by the CPC and CFIA, and can help trace a hog back to its starting point in the market to prevent further outbreaks of PED’s and other diseases.

A case last year in Manitoba was narrowed down in 15 seconds using the technology.

Pit foam gases are becoming an increasing issue for producers, as an estimated 25 percent of producers in the U.S. are experiencing issues.

Bradshaw suggested taking extreme safety precautions when encountering and attempting to remove the foam.

Another session featured Dr. Laura Beveridge of Farm & Food Care Ontario showcasing her organization’s new E-learner software.

The software educates producers on the Code of Practice, which concerns hog welfare and handling for producers.

The software will be available soon on the Farm & Food Care Ontario website, as well as a digital download and a smartphone app.

The Ontario Pork Congress was held this past Wednesday and Thursday.
