Statistics Canada tracks the amount of water agricultural producers use every couple of years.
The agency recently released it's 2014 survey, showing the amount used in 2014 was almost the same as what was used in 2012, 1.7 billion cubic meters. Most provinces posted drops in the amount of water farmers except for Saskatchewan, Alberta and B-C.
British Columbia farmers used 18 per cent more water volume in 2014 than they did in 2012. Here in Ontario, farmers cut their use of water by about two-thirds to 12.8 million cubic meters. Statscan says off-farm water was the main source for most of the western provinces, while most irrigation water in Eastern Canada came from on-farm, surface water sources.
The agency reports 55 per cent of that water is used for field crops, 40 per cent for forage crops, 3 per cent for fruit crops and 2 per cent for vegetable crops.
