U of G Prof Suggests TPP Will Lead To Supply Management 'Restructuring'

A University of Guelph professor sees the Trans Pacific Partnership as a great opportunity for Canadians to ask our leaders to shape a real vision for Canadian agrifood.

Doctor Sylvain Charlebois suggests the deal benefits some sectors - like processing, beef and pork.

However, he says it will also lead to serious headwinds for supply managed sectors, like dairy.

And he expects Canada will likely give greater agricultural market access in the future.

Charlebois says that's going to require a restructuring of the supply management regime.

But he argues that will only happen with the right type of support from the provinces and the federal government.

The professor says governments must be prepared to give the industry the time and resources to foster better streamlining during the transition.

Charlebois is a Professor of the Food Institute at the University of Guelph.

His comments were published in a column distributed by Troy Media.
