Report Gives Canada Top Marks For Food Safety

The Conference Board of Canada says this country performs well in the areas of food safety and food security.

The board recently released the preliminary results from it's first ever Canadian Food Observatory annual report.

The report measures Canada's food and beverage sector performance in five areas against 16 peer OECD countries.

It gives Canada an A for food safety, a B for food security, a B minus for industry prosperity and a C plus for environmental sustainability.

The report has Canada and Ireland at the top of the list for food safety.

While overall food availability is not an issue nationally in this country, the report says access to safe, nutritious and affordable food remains a broad concern.

It argues Canada punches below it's weight in food innovation, product market regulation, livestock production and representation among leading global food companies.

The low grade for environmental sustainability is blamed on high rates of both household food waste and food losses.

The report is also critical of our rising rates of greenhouse gas and ammonia emissions.

However, it says Canada performs strongly in soil health.

The Conference Board of Canada's Canadian Food Observatory first annual report card on food was released at a recent summit in Toronto.
