'Promising' Kemptville Options 'Should Be Encouraged'

There are currently no post-secondary education institutions in Ontario intrested in providing education or training at the former University of Guelph Kemptville Campus.

That's the conclusion of a working group set up by OMAFRA.

The group suggests the lack of interest is because of the demographic and financial realities facing post-secondary institutions in Ontario today.

However, the group says there are a number of emerging opportunities outside the mandate it was established to investigate.

The group's members believe some of those are promising and should be encouraged.

One of them would involve working with the Kemptville College Alumni Association and others to bring forward detailed, sustainably-funded agricultural and food systems education and training programs.

That might be possible under the Private Career College Act.

The working group says another option would be forging an expanded partnership with the TR Leger School of Adult, Alternative and Continuing Education of the Upper Canada District School Board.

The group also sees potential in developing a partnership to offer exam preparatory training for new Canadians.

The future of the Kemptville campus has become an issue with the decision of the University of Guelph to discontinue offering post-secondary education and training at the Eastern Ontario college.
