Doctor Temple Grandin says her big frustration is that consumers don't know about the improvements made in handling animals.
The well-known farm animal care researcher was one of the presenters at the recent Banff Pork Seminar in Alberta.
She says there have been great improvements in animal handling in the industry, but consumers are woefully behind in their knowledge of what's going on.
Doctor Grandin feels the industry is doing the worst job of telling it's story to the rapidly expanding millennial generation. That is the generation which is expected to be nearly 20% of the population by 2020.
She points out research shows farmers are a trusted source of information for consumers.
She suggests the pork industry needs to create programs where producers can communicate directly with consumers.
According to Doctor Grandin, there are practices in animal agriculture that need to be improved and there are others that absolutely need to be defended.
In her opinion, fighting over so stalls is likely not worth it.
