B-C Dairy Group Responds To Chilliwack Abuse Charges

The B-C Dairy Association says it respects the investigation by Crown Counsel into allegations of animal abuse at Chilliwack Cattle Sales.

The crown laid a number of charges last week against the dairy farm and seven of it's employees.

That's the result of an investigation launched after the Mercy for Animals group released an undercover video from the farm.

The B-C Dairy Association says events shown in that video were greatly disturbing to the industry at both the provincial and national level.

The Association says it has worked with a number of groups to make changes it hopes will further assure animal care on B-C dairy farms.

That includes making the Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Dairy Cattle part of the provincial Cruelty to Animals Act.

The B-C Milk Marketing Board made that code mandatory for all B-C producers in 2014.

The Association says random farm inspections ensuring Code compliance are being conducted by an independent animal welfare evaluator on an ongoing basis.

The ProAction Dairy Animal Care program is also now mandatory on dairy farms across B-C.
