Cool Temps Delaying Ontario Corn Crop Emergence

About 85 per cent of the provincial corn crop is in the ground.

OMAFRA reports livestock producers with manure to apply and fields on heavy clay soils have about 50 per cent of the intended acres planted.

Ministry specialists say cool soil temperatures have delayed emergence.

Soybean planting is 15 to 20 per cent completed.

OMAFRA points out the best method for controlling glyphosate resistant Canada fleabane is to control it before the soybeans are planted to within three days of emergence.

Nearly all the canola is planted, except for some in the New Liskeard area.

Canola acreage is about 20 per cent higher this year - most of it in the canola growing regions in the souther half of Ontario.

The ministry is reporting winter wheat crops continue to impress with low disease levels.

Cool conditions are now expected to mean a shorter crop with less risk of lodging than originally expected.

And this week's OMAFRA Field Crop Report says forage growth has been slower than average because of the cool conditions, but the stands are looking uniform and thick with very little winter damage.
