The Ontario Beekeepers Association has taken its concerns about bee health to the federal Standing Committee on Agriculture.
Association Vice-President Andre Flys made four recommendations to the committee on behalf of the OBA.
Two dealt with pesticides, one with the border and the fourth with the Bee Health Roundtable.
The OBA wants the federal government to step up efforts to significantly reduce or eliminated what the Association calls the improper use of pesticides as a preventative measure.
It also wants an independent panel of bee health experts to provide oversight for the review of all systemic pesticides.
On the border, the OBA says it has to remain closed to imports of U-S bees to avoid compromising the stability and future sustainability of the Canadian beekeeping industry.
And the Ontario group is calling for a reassessment of the mandate and mission of the Bee Health Roundtable.
According to the OBA, a reconstituted roundtable that reflects the full range of societal interests and expertise would be more likely to chart a positive and long-lasting course for bee health in Canada.
