OPC Chair: Positive Momentum In The Ontario Pork Industry

The President of the Ontario Pork Congress says the provincial hog industry has developed some positive momentum over the past three years.

Blair Cressman says that's one factor behind a record number of exhibitors lined up for this week's event.

Another is the new code of practice for the hog sector.

"Key aspects of it that are driving some changes to our sector that are being evaluated across the board as it relates to housing and management of livestock."

Cressman suggests that has a lot of producers considering significant changes in their operations.

The Congress has evolved over its 43 years, including cutting back to just one live hog show, the Bacon Makers Classic.

Cressman says that's largely because of biosecurity concerns.

Congress officials describe this week's event as two days of networking, education, food and festivities.

The Ontario Pork Congress runs Wednesday and Thursday at the Stratford Rotary Complex in Stratford.

Cressman says the new code of practice for the hog sector also has many producers looking at significant changes in their operations.
