New regulations that require pain mitigation drugs for piglet tail docking and castration come into effect July 1st.
The Ontario Pork Congress hosted several sessions which outlined the new requirements for pork producers at their annual event in Stratford this week.
The presentation highlighted a number of drugs that will be available to pork producers in the near future like Metacam.
Veterinarian Mike DeGroot has been presenting information on the new regulations in order to spread awareness of how producers will have to adapt.
“In order to get on these food safety programs that the majority of producers are on and required to ship pigs that they’ll be forced to use the pain medications as well in their protocols and they’ll be working with their herd veterinarian to make sure that these protocols are done correctly as well.”
