Cattle Prices Steady to Slightly Higher Last Week

The Beef Farmers of Ontario report fed cattle exports to the U.S. from Ontario totalled 1,461 head in the opening week of October.

That's the highest export volume since May of 2014.

BFO also notes auction markets for fed cattle had good demand as prices were up 1 to 4 dollars.

Just over 1,900 head of cull cows sold through auction. That was down from the previous week because of the holiday but also 289 less than Thanksgiving week last year.

Cull cows averaged $72.60, 38 cents less than the prior week, which is more than 18 dollars lower than a year ago.

The farmers say the Ontario railgrade market continued to vary widely throughout last week.

However, the week ended with prices up an average of $4.50 from seven days earlier.

They also point out lighter receipts of stocker and feeder cattle led to prices which were mostly steady to one dollar higher.

Kevin Grier of the Canadian Boxed Beef Report says big retailers are likely to keep beef items on their front pages.

He adds lower pricing is quite evident now. That's led to an increased movement of beef at retail.
