The Vineland Research and Innovation Centre has received funding to develop disease-resistant apples and tomatoes.
$920,000 has been granted through the Growing Forward 2, AgriInnovation Program.
Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Lawrence MacAulay, who was on hand to make the announcement yesterday, says the new innovative varieties developed at the centre will help drive the ag sector forward.
He adds the funding shows the government's committment to helping farmers stay ahead of the market with superior varieties of crops.
Last year, green house tomatoes brought in $516 million at the farm gate and led to $311 million in exports.
Behind blueberries, Apples are Canada's second most valuable fruit, with $50 million in exports and $181 million in on-farm sales in 2015.
