Ontario Pork Production Ahead of National Average

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada reports Canada's hog slaughter to be 1.9 per cent ahead of last year at this time.

Ontario has processed 4.22 million head, an increase of 2.7 per cent on the year.

Canada's overall pork production has now pushed 2.5 per cent ahead of 2015, which is equivalent to nearly 41,000 tonnes.

AAFC also notes the nation's pork exports to be down to all but three of our 13 biggest customers.

Japan has taken 1 per cent more this year, Cuba is up by 33 per cent.

The main reason why exports are up by 7.9 per cent overall from 2015 is a 352 per cent increase in shipments to China.

Ron Plain of the University of Missouri reports U.S. hog slaughter to be running 1-2 per cent higher across the country from this time last year.

Last week's slaughter was down 4.5 per cent from the previous week's record numbers but still up 6.5 per cent from a year ago.

Plain points out large numbers are still on the horizon as some processors in North Carolina are yet to resume production since Hurricane Matthew rolled through.

He also notes hog futures were up sharply over the past seven days.

December's contract finished the week at an increase of $4.95, February was up $5.27 and a half.
