Number Of Confirmed TB Cows Hits Half Dozen

More than 40 herds in western Canada have now been quarantined as a result of the CFIA's ongoing bovine tuberculosis investigation.

The agency notes the number of confirmed TB cows is now up to six.

CFIA Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Harpeet Kochar says 12 herds have qualified as "infected" as they've had contact with the confirmed cows.

He notes analysis shows the degree of contact poses the same threat in all interactions, thus all 12 herds will be given the same treatment.

"In all cases where bovine tuberculosis is suspected or confirmed, the goal is to minimize disruption to producers while respecting Canada's domestic and international obligations to take appropriate and prudent control measures," says Dr. Kochar.

He adds such measures are critical for protecting the health of Canadian livestock and maintaining market access for Canada's beef producers.

More than 22,000 animals are now under quarantine.
