Farming Input Prices Declining

Statistics Canada's 2016 third quarter farm input numbers show running a farm business has become a bit cheaper recently.

The Farm Input Price Index across the country dropped by an average of .8 per cent from the previous quarter and a little more than 5 per cent from the same time in 2015.

Ontario inputs declined by 1.3 per cent from the second quarter and 4.7 per cent from a year earlier.

The agency notes the decline came mostly from lower prices for animal production -- most noticeably, a 6.5 per cent decline in cattle.

Crop production also dipped by 2.1 per cent, mainly due to lower fertilizer prices.

Ontario was one of six provinces to report a decrease in the Farm Input Price Index. Alberta led the way, down a full 11 points from last year.
