The animal care program put in place by the Chicken Farmers of Canada has passed its inaugural third-party audit.
The certification company, NSF International, said in its report that the program has been implemented effectively, has consistently applied measures, and is being maintained properly.
Under the animal care program, audits of all chicken farms are conducted annually.
CFC notes the program is mandatory and includes enforcement measures for those who fail to comply.
It's also been applied to all 2,800 broiler chicken farms in Canada since 2009.
CFC adds, with the Code of Practice for raising chickens completed in 2016, the organization has begun implementing new requirements and is also in the process of updating its own animal care program.
