Nutrient management is a key focus in agriculture and a recent highlight at a Huron County Water Protection Steering Committee meeting.
The discussion centered around concerns about the spreading of non-agricultural materials.
OMAFRA Environmental Specialist, Jacqui Empson-Laporte, said that many might have worries about material sourcing and wonder if it is appropriate to be land-applied.
"There are lots of standards governing those kinds of non-agricultural materials, like sewage bio-solids," said Empson-Laporte.
Laporte adds that those worried about the spread of non-agricultural materials should note that strict rules prevent many potentially harmful situations from occurring.
Both OMAFRA and industry are endorsing the 4R Initiative to partake in safe and effective nutrient management.
"Those four R's are the right source of organic amendments, the right rate for the crops that need to grow, or putting it on at the right time, because if we don't put it on at the right time then the crops aren't using it to their full potential and the right place, where the crops need them," added Empson-Laporte.
There has also been concern over the timing of nutrient application.
Larger acreages and variable weather patterns can complicate that decision but there is a wide range of technology to help address those issues.
