Farmers Celebrate Food Freedom Day

Food Freedom Day is being celebrated in Chatham-Kent today, marking the point when most in the region have made enough money to cover their grocery bill for the year.

Mary Anne Udvari with the Kent Federation of Agriculture feels it's important to highlight how affordable food is in the region.

"This is a perfect opportunity to educate people as far as Food Freedom Day and let people know what farmers are able to do for them as well," says Udvari. "We are very fortunate as Canadians to be producing local food and we're able to get food from across the country that is quite reasonable [in price]."

Udvari says Canadians are fortunate to celebrate Food Freedom Day earlier than many other countries and stresses buying local will help keep area farm operations viable. The Canadian Federation of Agriculture marks Food Freedom Day on February 14.

As part of celebrating the day - $7,500 in cash and food donations will go to help programs at the Salvation Army and Outreach for Hunger.
