Angry and frustrated students filled the University of Windsor board of governors meeting Tuesday as they voted to hike tuition fees.
Students will see an increase of between 2-5% this year or anywhere from $58 to more than $600 per semester in some programs.
Student and CUPE Local 4580 President Mia Sisic wasn't surprised by the decision. "The board of governors, it seems, is primarily made up of people who are not only well-off, but who seem to have no interests in helping the middle class and those who are in poverty," says Sisic.
She says students are struggling and the University of Windsor doesn't listen. "Every year we show up. Every year we tell them we're starving. Every year we tell them we live in rooms that are mice-infested," says Sisic. "Every year come and tell them that we have to work at Subway because we can't make ends meet and we have master's degrees."
University of Windsor President Alan Wildeman says other options were explored and a tuition increase is something that must be done to sustain and enhance the university. Wildeman also says tuition rates also speak to the quality of the institution.
