Chatham-Kent's Municipal Heritage Committee is concerned homeowners are holding back on putting their properties up for heritage designation.
Member and Chatham Councillor Michael Bondy says some residents are worried they can't update their homes if it's been declared a heritage property.
But Bondy says most properties are designated for the architecture. "You're very unlikely to change the architecture of a home. People like to know they can change carpet, or paint, or put a deck on. These things almost never fall under the heritage designation."
Property owners with heritage designation do qualify for a tax benefit. Bondy encourages anyone who believes they might have a property worthy of designation, to contact the municipality.
