CKHA Changes Anaesthesia Rules

A Chatham-Kent family is losing their second family doctor in the last eight years following a rule change from the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance.

BlackburnNews.com received an email from a concerned resident whose family doctor was moving away. According to the email, the doctor was leaving Chatham-Kent because of a new rule put in place by the CKHA that keeps family physicians from anaesthetizing certain patients and cases.

The CKHA confirmed the rule change, with Chief of Medical Staff Dr. Ranjith Chandrasena saying in an emailed statement it was the result of an 18-month review process.

While family physicians can continue to work within the scope of their practice, specialist anaesthetists will handle complex anaesthesia cases. The change affects a total of three family doctors in Chatham-Kent.
