Delaware Nation Child Protocol

Delaware First Nation and the Chatham-Kent Children's Aid Society now have a formal agreement on child care protocol.

Chief Greg Peters says it specifies children in need of care will remain in their community rather than be moved to other areas.

"We've had a very good working relationship so we've managed case by case and this just puts on the record that we have a formal customary care agreement," he says. "I think what it is saying is that the province and the local CAS really recognize that the best way to care for First Nation children is in a First Nation setting."

Peters says the signing of the agreement is a step toward First Nations exercising jurisdiction in child welfare cases.
