Mold Shuts Down UofW Residence

A serious mold problem has forced the University of Windsor to shut down one of its residence buildings.

The Clark Residence building won't be ready for the start of the September semester due to the mold, and the university is currently testing another residence for the same problem.

Director of Public Affairs John Coleman says an environmental assessment is nearly complete. He says "substantial renovations" will be needed to address the mold problems.

"The university has taken every reasonable step to take into account health and safety issues, as we always do when problems come up," he says. "We look at them, monitor them, repair things and react fully."

Students were living in the Clark Residence this past school year, but Coleman isn't aware of any health issues.

He says mold has been a serious issue at the Clark Residence for a few months. The buildings date back to the 80s and house about 200 students.

"They will be allocated to other residences on campus," says Coleman, adding there will be enough room for all students who require housing.

It's unknown how long the residence will be closed.
