Danger Of Farm Life Addressed

Full sized tractors, ATVs and riding lawn mowers are being used this afternoon in a special farm safety day at the Chatham-Kent Children's Safety Village.

Executive Director Barb Lovell says there is an aspect of rural safety in the normal programs at the village, but with the help of several local businesses they are focusing in on farm safety.

"The local dealerships that are here with their farming equipment teaching safety to kids, making them recognize the hazards," she says. "We're quick to throw our kids on the lawn mower and have them go cut the grass, but are we teaching them the safety aspects of it, as well as ATVs."

Included in the lessons are the dangers of power take-offs on tractors and grain bin safety.

Almost every year there are reports from somewhere in Ontario of a child being trapped in a grain bin.
