Chatham-Kent-Leamington MP Dave Van Kesteren will have to get used to acting as part of the opposition for the next four years.
While the Conservative incumbent was able to retain his seat, his party took a big hit, losing out to a majority Liberal government. Van Kesteren says he's honestly shocked.
"Most people that enter the political arena are optimists by nature. You wouldn't do this if you didn't have some optimism. I was thinking we wouldn't get that majority government, but I was starting to consider a minority government and how that would work."
NDP candidate Tony Walsh placed third gathering 17.8% of the vote. He visited Van Kesteren's headquarters late on election night to offer his congratulations.
"Even though we were competing, we were gentleman. I got to know him a little better throughout this experience, and I appreciated that."
In the end Van Kesteren snagged 42.5% of the vote, also beating out Liberal Katie Omstead (37.1%) and the Green Party's Mark Vercouteren (2.7%).
