The Great Big Crunch

Thousands of students across the municipality are biting into locally grown apples today and learning about healthy foods.

Chatham-Kent Student Nutrition Co-ordinator Elaine Lewis says it's all part of the annual Great Big Crunch Event.

"Fall is such a wonderful season for apples in our community," says Lewis. "We're just introducing the children to the fact that they're grown locally and they are good for them."

Lewis says the event is especially important because Chatham-Kent is the lowest per capita consumer of fresh fruits and vegetables in Ontario.

"We want to make that change," says Lewis. "And the way to do that is to introduce children to how good healthy food really does taste."

46 schools are taking part in the event in Chatham-Kent this year.
