Elderly Woman Duped By Scam

A Chatham-Kent senior has fallen victim to a fraud three times this week that has cost her a large sum of money.

On three separate occasions, a 70-year-old woman was instructed to send money through Western Union or she would be arrested for failing to pay back taxes to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

Chatham-Kent police Constable Renee Cowell says if you get a fraudulent call, hang up and immediately report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

"I know we've all been on the receiving end of an unsolicited email or phone call where someone is asking for our personal or financial information," says Cowell. "I guess the first step in protecting yourself from being a victim of fraud is by recognizing it, and this is when we ask everyone to trust their instincts, if it just doesn't feel right or sound right, it probably isn't."
