Freezing Rain Shatters Record

Monday's ice pellets and freezing rain shattered a precipitation record in Windsor as the city also gears up to be the warmest December ever.

A total of 28.4mm of wet weather fell in the city beating the previous record of 24.9mm set back in 1968.

Environment Canada meteorologist Geoff Coulson says rain isn't unusual this time of year.

"For a good portion of southern Ontario, given the fact that we spent a lot of the winter sort of fluctuating around that freezing mark, we can see all forms of precipitation during the month of December and even through January and February," he says.

Given the warm temps, Windsor is on track for having its warmest December ever on record. Meteorologists are combing through records dating back to the 1940s at Windsor Airport.

"We haven't really seen this type of warmth this long for a month of December in the record books," Coulson says.

Anyone planning New Year's Eve travel can expect quiet weather with the possibility of some flurries, but no major storms, Coulson says.
