The Windsor Detroit Bridge Authority is still working to develop the request for proposal (RFP) for the Gordie Howe International Bridge.
Three proponents have been short listed and invited to bid on the RFP when it is issued.
WDBA President Michael Cautillo says the document will include guidelines to shape the aesthetics of the bridge that will be a part of the Windsor-Detroit landscape for the next 125 years.
"As part of our RFP we have developed a very extensive aesthetic guide that we're going to providing to the bidders so that they can come forward with the designs," says Cautillo.
The WDBA says the RFP also allows the possibility of bike lanes but ultimately that decision will lie with both governments and border security agencies.
"A lot of that will rest with the governments on both sides of the border who have responsibility for safety, customs all of those kinds of things. Those are beyond our mandate," says Dwight Duncan, chair of the WDBA.
They say the design also needs to consider future technologies like the possibility of autonomous vehicles.
