OB Group Hopes For Stability

"Save Leamington OB" leaders anticipate the hiring of three new OB/GYN's at the local hospital will provide stability in the department.

On Friday, the Ministry of Health committed $1.3-million annually to hire and retain the new doctors. This comes after a year and a half battle from community members to keep the OB unit open at Leamington District Memorial Hospital.

Save Leamington OB's Kim DeYong says having just one obstetrician right now makes it difficult to attract more professionals.

"Our [one] OB was holding down the fort as long as she could," says DeYong. "Attracting new professionals is difficult with an unstable unit. With funding being guranteed, the unit can attract the best people."

Hospital officials say one OB/GYN has already signed on to start working in July.
