War Amps Raising Cash Locally

The War Amps are mailing out keychains in Southwestern Ontario this week to help support amputees.

The keychains are free, but donations are encouraged, and Public Awareness Coordinator Jamie Lund says they're useful too.

"If you ever lose your keys, the person who finds them can either into any Canada Post mailbox or they can call the 1-800 number on the back of the key tag," she says. "Those keys can be returned to the person who lost them free of charge."

While the War Amps is known for helping veterans, Lund says many of the people it helps are children.

In 2013, the last year financials were available at waramps.ca, the charity said it raised more than $13.6-million in Canada, and  Lund says that money helps change lives.

"We're able to provide recreational limbs to child amputees, and we cover the full cost of those so that child amputees can participate in any sport or activity that they chose to," she says.

A prosthetic leg can cost as much as $50,000 while an arm can cost up to $25,000. As the amputee gains or loses weight, or a child grows, prosthetics need to be replaced.
