Heat Warning In Effect

Summer officially arrives on Monday and Mother Nature is delivering weather and warm temperatures to match the calendar.

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for much of southern Ontario, saying the most significant heat episode of the year is expected.

The warning is currently in effect for Windsor-Essex, Chatham-Kent, Sarnia-Lambton, London-Middlesex, as well as Grey, Perth and Wellington counties.

A special air quality statement was also issued for the region on Sunday, due to increased likelihood of high air pollution levels in southern Ontario. The alert has since been rescinded.

Building heat over the last few days is expected to peak Sunday and Monday with the thermometers reaching low to mid 30 C. Overnight temperatures will also be warmer than normal Sunday night in the low 20 C in many areas.

An approaching cold front is expected Monday afternoon bringing with it scattered showers and thunderstorms, followed by cooler conditions Monday night.

Hot conditions can pose a health risk, especially to children, individuals with pre-existing health conditions and the elderly.

Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

Residents are reminded to take proper precautions, avoid strenuous outdoor activities and drink plenty of water.
