Remains Of Black Bear Cub Found Near Aamjiwnaang

A grisly discovery near Aamjiwnaang First Nation confirms the presence of black bears in Sarnia-Lambton.

A man cutting grass in a field close to the bush line at Churchill Rd. and Vidal St. found the partial remains of a black bear cub Tuesday.

Band Councillor Shawn Plain doesn't think the remains were dumped there and suspects coyotes may have played a part.

"I'm not an expert by any means but I would say it's probably a yearling cub of some sort," says Plain. "The bear sightings recently in the area, you know, maybe this was the cub of a mother and it had been separated by coyotes or what have you, I don't know."

Plain says the advice of elders was sought and the remains were removed from the area and buried at an undisclosed location in a First Nation ceremony.

There have been numerous black bear sightings in the area recently.
