More People Diving Into Public Pools Around CK

Southern Ontario's continued heat wave is making waves at community pools this summer.

Coordinator of aquatic services, Ashley Deboer, says as the humidity climbs, so does the attendance at public pools across Chatham-Kent.

"It's much hotter this year than in past years," says Deboer. "Just with the heat we always have extra staff on sight, and all of them have been up on the guard platform."

While Deboer says the pools are used mostly by summer camps and families, it's only the base of their patronage.

"Some adults have also been coming and taking advantage of the pools when there's a lane available, and swimming some lengths at that time."

She says they don't track specific figures, but know numbers are up at their pools based on foot traffic.

And beyond the hot, hot heat, Deboer thinks their free, sponsored swims might also have something to do with it.

"Super Kids CK sponsors all of the pools for free weekends, and then some other community companies also sponsor swims, so there's usually higher attendance when the swim is free."
